Our 'Spring 2016' Newsletter

Sydney Gardens is the only remaining Georgian Pleasure Park in the country. The Friends of Sydney Gardens (FoSG) feel strongly that this special place should be protected and conserved to ensure the park can be enjoyed by young and old for many years to come.

FoSG are an enthusiastic group who wish to encourage everyone, with an interest in Sydney Gardens, to become a member. The FoSG newsletter will keep you informed of what is happening to your park. A website has been developed and will be regularly up dated http://www.friendsofsydneygardens.org.

If you would like to become a member of FoSG or have any suggestions on improving or maintaining your park, please contact the FoSG secretary Lizzie, email: info@friendsofsydneygardens.org.

Sydney Gardens Steering Group

The SGSG was established in 2015 to provide oversight to proposed conservation activities and improvements in Sydney Gardens. The FoSG sit on this steering group and play an active role in decisions regarding development of the gardens. In addition to FoSG, SGSG is comprised of representatives from BANES, local resident associations and the neighbouring Holburne Museum. In the last year, activities have focused on landscaping with pruning and/or the removal of some trees and shrubs. More recently, the SGSG has supported BANES decision to submit a Stage 1 application for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund's 'Parks for People' programme - see Heritage Lottery Fund below.

Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF)
BANES, supported by the SGSG, plans to submit a Stage 1 application for funding from the HLF at the end of August. A 'Play' consultant and a 'Design' consultant are being appointed to work on the design plan and the HLF application. This process will involve local community engagement, we encourage local residents & Sydney Gardens users to take this opportunity to provide input. Contact: info@friendsofsydneygardens.org

Community Action Days

Over three weekends beginning Nov 22nd a total of 60 people; FoSG members and local residents, turned out to plant over 14,100 bulbs in Sydney Gardens. (Above planting – below some of the bulbs in bloom). We thank all of those involved for their hard work. FoSG is liaising with BANES on their future planting plans. If you would like to participate in the next Community Action Day, please e-mail for details: info@sydneygardens.org.

Upgrade of Canal Path

The upgrade of 2.2 km of canal path between the A36 Beckford Road and Bathampton will begin 14th March 2016, completion scheduled for 15th July 2016. The project partnership is between BANES and Canal & River Trust, with funding via Dep’t of Transport City Cycle Ambition Fund 2. The works will include widening the path, where necessary to achieve a standard width of 2.5m. The path will comprise 100mm deep sub- base and a 50mm dense bitumen macadam layer. This will be topped by tar spray and chippings; colour to match present limestone finish. The tow path will be closed during this time however access for boat users will be available. Also a temporary pathway will be created and a diversion put in place: see signage for further information.

Volunteers Required
Litter is collected by BANES from Sydney Gardens on week days only because of this from July 2014 FoSG volunteers have been collecting litter at the weekend. BANES parks department support FoSG effort by providing high visibility jackets, litter pickers, gloves and refuse bags. FoSG have also established a group of volunteers to help with small maintenance tasks in the garden e.g. weeding and clearing flower beds. Come and join us and make a difference to your park. Contact: info@friendsofsydneygardens.org.
Thank you
